US Robotics USR8200 Secure Storage Router Pro Firmware 3.10.12.4.

Issue:

  • Some USR8200 customers reported that they can no longer browse the Internet after their cable company upgraded their DNS servers.

    Investigation results:

  • This problem is not limited to the USR8200 but also affects a wide variety of routers on the market. The problem is based on how a UDP packet is generated by the router. It appears that the updated DNS servers are rejecting UDP packets that do not contain checksums.

    Reason:

  • The UDP specification states the checksum is optional and most routers choose not to generate this checksum. However, the upgraded DNS servers are now rejecting packets that don't contain checksums.

    Solution:

  • The proper fix should be implemented on the DNS servers. However until this can be done we have released an emergency patch 3.10.12.4 which addresses the DNS problem outlined above by generating a checksum for UDP.
